Higher Things

Many thanks to the Higher Things youth organization for great "Amen" conference this year in St. Louis (Thanks for the conferences in Stanton and Irvine as well... our kids attended the St. Louis conference). This is the first year we've been able to send a group from Epiphany, and I am amazed at the new appreciation our kids have for Lutheranism and especially the liturgy. One of the things that stood out for me in the Higher Things promotional DVD was a pastor who said he could trust that his students would hear the same things he taught them in Catechism class when they attended a Higher Things conference. That has proven so true! What a great resource for the Church!

I've heard rumors that some of the powers that be in the Missouri Synod are unhappy with Higher Things. I pray this is not true. How could the powers that be in a confessional Lutheran church body ever be unhappy with an organization that makes confessional Lutherans out of our youth?!

It's no rumor... I've seen Rev. Terry Dittmer get very angry over the simple mention of Higher Things. Why? Because he views HT as a threat.

Horror of horrors... the liturgy, hymns, private confession and absolution...

That is the question...

Sam and Tim,

Yes, that IS the question, and I'll admit, it is a constant struggle for me to put the best construction on everything when it comes to these powers that be in the LCMS who cancel confessional Lutheran radio programs, fire confessional Lutheran missionaries (who happen to be friends of mine), and oppose confessional Lutheran youth organizations. Not that any of those powers that be in St. Louis read this blog, but if, by God's grace, they do happen upon my Higher Things post, that last question is meant to be reflective for them. But perhaps veiled language is inappropriate from here on out. Let us be explicit... If any one of those powers that be in St. Louis happens upon this post and this response, if you oppose confessional Lutheranism in any of its manifestations, especially for political reasons, repent. You are hurting the church, which is our Lord's body. In the meantime, I will continue to struggle and do my best to put the best construction on your actions. But just so you know, you're making it very difficult. Lord, have mercy on us all. Amen.
